An unsigned American author has captured the imagination of the traditional and online media alike by serialising his novel The French Revolution exclusively through a sequence of tweets on Twitter.
San Francisco based writer Matt Stewart decided to post his story 140 characters at a time on the microblogging site after failing to find a publisher for his novel.
Stewart came up the idea, a Twitter first, with his agent and he reckons it will take nearly 4,000 tweets to publish the 95,000-word novel from start to finish.
He said that he didn't expect anyone to read through his entire work, which chronicles the journey of a San Francisco family as it forges its place in history.
But Stewart said he hoped it could lead to a few sales from his Twitter followers interested in reading more.
His first tweet on 14 July was timed to PR perfection, coinciding with the day everyone associates with the French Revolution- Bastille Day.
Few in the PR industry would argue that there is simply no better way of getting publicity than being the first to do something.
But after pulling off a double PR coup by being the first to do something on the latest social medium that everyone is talking about, Stewart can now confidently expect to see publishers queuing up to make a deal.
