Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has been left with egg on his face after it emerged that he had no idea how much a state pensioner received.
When asked during an interview how much a single person's pension was, Clegg said it was about £30 a week - the actual amount is £90.70.
The Lib Dem leader was educated at Westminster School, one of the country's most exclusive public schools, and lives in a £1.3 million home in Putney.
So it was hardly surprising when Clegg came in for stick from pensioners' charities and rival parties, who branded him as being out of touch with the general public.
The horrendous PR blunder is likely to further undermine the image of the Lib Dem party, which is looking to wrest left-wing voters from a beleaguered New Labour.
And it comes barely a fortnight after Clegg, who earns £61,000 a year, got himself into another PR pickle after claiming that he and his wife, who is well-heeled lawyer, were victims of the credit crunch.
Clegg, who also has a second home in Sheffield, astonished voters after complaining that the family had been feeling the pinch and had been forced to switch the weekly shopping from upmarket internet grocer Ocado to Sainsbury's.
