A BBC commentator has got the red card from listeners after making an inappropriate remark on air about the Madrid air crash while reporting on a football match.
Reporter Chris Price landed himself in hot water when he said that Rochdale were making more holes in the Bradford defence than in a Spanish aircraft.
BBC Radio Manchester was forced to apologise following a deluge of complaints from outraged listeners about the remark, which came just days after a Spanair plane crashed and burst into flames at Madrid's Barajas International airport, killing more than 150 people.
Former BBC commentator, Mike Brookes, who is now media officer for Rochdale Football Club, described the comment as unprofessional and stupid.
There was no way out for the 25-year-old freelance journalist from Rochdale, who admitted making a horrible mistake.
Price claimed he was trying to liven up his report by being descriptive and had only a split second to come up with a live match update.
But that brief moment of madness demonstrates the care people need to take when working in the public domain.
This gaffe not only caused widespread offence and damage to the BBC, but could have also led to irreversible damage to the young reporter's career.
