A zoo in Austria was so convinced by the merits of Facebook as a PR tool that it set out to demonstrate that even a monkey could do it.
And now Vienna's famous Tiergarten is celebrating a public relations triumph after Nonja the orang-utan became a Facebook hit and grabbed the attention of newspapers across the continent.
The zoo kitted out the 33-year-old primate with a specially adapted digital camera that rewards her with a dose of raisins every time she takes a snap.
The pictures of Nonja and her three furry ape friends in a variety of action poses are uploaded to her very own Facebook page, which has already courted a following of more than 500 fans in a matter of days.
The Tiergarten claims that the scheme was intended to keep the apes entertained in their enclosure. However, it is clear that the underlying objective of the project has been to combine animal magnetism with the PR power of social media to raise awareness of the zoo.
PR practitioners are always on the lookout for people or animals to become the face of a business or organisation and in the case of Nonja they have hit on a very clever way to build up a strong following.
