It seemed like a great idea at the time: promote AIDS awareness by comparing the disease to evil dictators.
The advert seemed like a winner too, a Hollywood style-sex scene which climaxes with the revelation that one of the participants is Hitler.
Even the tagline AIDS is a Mass Murderer looked like the sort of snappy sound-bite that would attract an audience.
But the publicity generated by the campaign is backfiring on the group responsible for it with some labeling the ad as dangerous.
A British AIDS charity, has pointed out that linking carriers of the disease with genocidal maniacs like Hitler and Stalin increases the stigma surrounding the illness, scaring people away from getting tested.
They also criticize the ad for not including information on how to protect yourself against AIDS apart from, apparently, fearing those with the condition.
It looks like, in all the excitement of coming up with a good idea, the German company responsible forgot about the sensitivity needed when handling this issue.
They have managed to generate a lot of hype, but by not presenting anything useful, all this group has done is offend people and obstruct a serious message.
