A report into the search habits of Google News users has reinforced the predominant view in the PR industry that celebrity sells.
The survey by internet monitoring service Hitwise revealed that nearly a quarter of all searches on Google News UK were related to celebrity with Jade Goody leading the list of most popular search terms.
By sharp contrast, only a small minority of visitors used the site to access serious news stories.
Search terms related to sport were the second most popular, taking a fifth of traffic, with business (10%) and technology (6%) representing the most popular non-entertainment categories.
The report comes only days after BBC News received an avalanche of complaints from viewers unhappy with the level of coverage it gave to the story of Jade Goody's death.
But part of the BBC's remit is to focus on the news that its audiences want to hear. And quite clearly the Hitwise figures demonstrate that there was a public appetite for the Jade Goody story and that the BBC was justified in its level of coverage.
